A BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS, FULL OF ATTRACTIONS
Located in the hills of Syracuse, New York, the campus features a mix of architectural styles, from 19th-century Romanesque Revival to modern contemporary. Overlooking downtown Syracuse, the university has several notable buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the Syracuse Stage building with its two theaters—the Storch, used by the school’s drama department, and the Archbold, where the Syracuse Stage professional theater company performs.
Art enthusiasts have plenty to see in Syracuse, including the SU Art Galleries and their main gallery space in the Shaffer Art Building on the main campus. Just off campus in a former furniture warehouse, the Warehouse Gallery, which features works from international artists in a variety of media. In addition, the Lowe Art Gallery in the Shaffer Art Building features student work, while the Schine Student Center has three gallery spaces: The Robert B. Menschel Photography Gallery, the Panasci Lounge Art Hanging space, and the White Cube Gallery. Syracuse has a permanent art collection of over 45,000 works from artists such as Hopper, Picasso, Rembrandt, Tiffany and Wyeth.
When it comes to athletics, the “Orange” of Syracuse participate in 20 intercollegiate sports, mostly in the NCAA Division I’s Atlantic Coast Conference. Many of the teams compete in the Carrier Dome, which is the largest domed stadium in the northeastern U.S. and the largest on-campus basketball arena in the nation. Syracuse has won 28 team national championships, including the 2003 NCAA championship in men’s basketball.
