SO MUCH TO SEE—ON THE GROUND AND IN THE SKY
Named Tulsa Municipal Airport when the city purchased it in 1929, the now-Tulsa International Airport greets millions of passengers every year. Many of them visit the Tulsa Air and Space Museum—opened in 1998—to explore Tulsa’s extensive aviation history. Featuring educational exhibits, hands-on activities and vintage aircraft, the museum added the James E. Bertelsmeyer Planetarium in 2006. The full-dome planetarium has full-dome digital shows, traditional star-gazing shows, and more.
Also in 2006, a Cultural Advisory Group was formed by a group of citizens from the local arts community in order to showcase works from local artists, galleries and museums throughout the airport terminal. Visitors today can admire Frank Lloyd Wright-designed furniture at the Price Tower Arts Center’s exhibit, unique pieces from the Gilcrease Museum’s Native American collection, and even a 160-foot-long mural. There’s even a statue of legendary humorist Will Rogers, “Oklahoma’s Native Son”—who famously said “I never met a man I didn’t like.”
