Get to Know Montgomery

Prep for Your Montgomery Visit
There's fun to be had for you and your family—from cultural festivals to a turn-of-the-century riverboat cruise. The city's weather and handy transportation make it easy to gather with loved ones, so get your fill of history and culture as you make your way through Montgomery.

Sunny With a Chance of Rain

Montgomery's climate is mild, for the most part. The coolest month, January, averages 59 F in the daytime, but bring a jacket—after dark, temperatures can drop below 40. The hottest days arrive with summer, when daytime temperatures average 90 in July and August and often hit 100. Summer rain will cool you. All those flowering gardens in Montgomery are nourished by 4 to 6 inches of rainfall every month, with the exceptions of May and October, which get about 3.5 and 2.9 inches, respectively. Summers are humid. You can still expect more sweet Southern sunshine than not, with Montgomery averaging 211 sunny days out of the year.

Attractions in Sweet Home Alabama

On the banks of the Alabama River in Montgomery's Riverfront District, old-fashioned fun awaits. Board a 19th-century riverboat, for an unforgettable cruise—dinner, scenic, blues or a themed cruise. Cheer the local team at Riverwalk Stadium, among the nation's best minor league baseball stadiums. At Blount Cultural Park, exciting festivals happen year-round, including the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra’s Broadway Under the Stars, so you can easily go from water side to stage seating in a day.

The Rosa Parks Museum and Library is a must-see. It is a moving tribute to the brave woman who refused to give her bus seat up, igniting the Montgomery Bus Boycott. At the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, stand at the same pulpit Martin Luther King Jr. led his flock from, and walk a block to the steps of the state capitol building to which he led the Montgomery Civil Rights March in 1965.

Diverse Economy in the Heart of DixieD

Montgomery is home not only to the state capitol but to a diverse economy that includes the USAF Air University; Civil War and civil rights tourism; service and trade; and industry that includes Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. There, you can tour Hyundai's first manufacturing plant in the United States. Aerospace is another industry important to Montgomery, beginning over a century ago when the Wright Brothers opened their first flight school in the city.
