Comfortably tucked away in the heart of the Hoosier State, less than an hour from the hustle and bustle of Indianapolis lays the decidedly slower-paced city of Anderson. Relax with a laid-back stroll through Anderson’s historic downtown district, where you'll find restaurants, shops and a lively arts scene.
Four-Season Conditions
Bundle up in the cold months of December and January, when Anderson’s highs linger in the 30s and its lows dip well below freezing. Between December and February, 4 to 6 inches of snow also dust the landscape each month. Although you’ll need to break out the umbrellas in April and May, the city’s rainiest months, the temps typically climb up to the 60s and 70s. Things really heat up between June and August, with temperatures rocketing to the 80s, so pack those shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. The fall is usually dry, with just a little rain and temps dropping from the low 60s to the high 40s.
Adventures in Anderson
Admire the work of local artists at the Anderson Center for the Arts, as well as the building itself—the former Carnegie Library, a stately 1905 limestone building with a breathtaking, 35-foot-high stained-glass rotunda. The equally ornate Paramount Theatre—a former 1929 movie palace—hosts dance shows, theatrical productions and concerts by the Anderson Symphony Orchestra throughout the year. Enter a well-preserved past at Mounds State Park, an archaeological site with 10 excavated earthworks—ancient sacred ritual sites built by the Adena-Hopewell people. If you prefer high-octane thrills, you can watch stock car racing at the Anderson Speedway.
Big Business
Healthcare professionals make up the majority of Anderson’s workforce, with Community Hospital Anderson and Saint Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital accounting for more than 2,000 jobs. Major corporations—including Xerox, Nestle and trucking company Carter Express—employ thousands of workers as well. In addition, several hundred people work at the Church of God’s headquarters and at Anderson University.
Travel Time
Indianapolis International Airport is just an hour south of Anderson, and several major airlines touch down here. From Indianapolis, you can reach Anderson by car via Interstate 69 or by riding Miller Trailways, a charter bus with twice-daily service between Anderson and the capital. Once you’re in town, the City of Anderson Transit System (CATS), Anderson’s bus line, has seven convenient routes throughout the city.
