Ranked the fifth most livable place by Forbes, Carlisle has tree-lined streets and restored architecture, making the region a relaxing place to spend a vacation and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The town served as a weapons depot during the Revolutionary War, and you can still view buildings and relics from the time. You can even see one of Molly Pitcher's pitchers at the Cumberland County Historical Society.
Four Distinct Seasons
You'll experience four distinct seasons in Carlisle, but the shoulder seasons—spring and autumn—have the mildest weather. Spring temperatures rise into the mid-60s by late April, bringing with them impressive displays of blooming cherry, crab apple and hawthorn leafs. Summer temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees, but humidity can soar up to 90 percent during this time of year—making it the perfect weather for a canoe ride along the Conodoguinet Creek Water Trail. You'll find that temperatures drop quickly in September, bringing about chilly nights fit for cuddling in front of a warm fireplace. Winter brings snow, and lots of it. Up to 35 inches fall throughout the season.
Attractions and Activities
Learn all about what life was like before the Revolutionary War at historic buildings around the city. The First Presbyterian Church, the oldest public building in Carlisle, was home to plotting revolutionaries; George Washington even attended a service at the church. Pay a visit to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, where you can wander through full-size reconstructions and engage in interactive simulations of wars dating back as far as the French and Indian War. Love seeing cool cars? The Carlisle Fairgrounds hosts 10 annual car, motorcycle and truck shows throughout the year that are worth checking out!
Development and Industry
While manufacturing is the king of industries in Pennsylvania as a whole, retail dominates in Carlisle. The quaint historic shopping district and three malls account for almost a third of jobs in the city. You'll also find education to be very significant to the community. Not only are there three schools of higher education in Carlisle—Dickinson School of Law, Dickinson College and the United States Army War College—but a dozen other private and public schools are nestled into the city's 5.5 square miles.
Getting There and Getting Around
Carlisle is relatively simple to reach, as it’s within 30 miles of the Harrisburg International Airport. Car rentals are available at the airport if you choose to drive, and taxis are available as well. You can ride the bus to get around town, but you'll find limited service. If you want to browse stores and shops, hop aboard the retail and shopping route bus. The service runs afternoon and evening hours Monday through Friday, and all day on Saturday. Two additional routes cater to daily commuters and those visiting medical facilities or other services around town.
