One of the largest sources of spring water in Texas, Comanche Springs, has drawn people and animals to this area for thousands of years. Military presence began here in 1858 with the establishment of Camp Stockton by troops from the 1st and 8th Infantry of the U.S. Army. The camp -- subsequently a fort -- was named in honor of U.S. Naval Commodore Robert Field Stockton. The military post protected settlers and travelers on the numerous roads and trails -- including the stage lines -- heading to California and Mexico from San Antonio. The abundant water of Comanche Springs made the camp a regular stop on these frontier crossroads, and it was here that these trails intersected with the Great Comanche Trail and the Butterfield Overland Mail Route from St. Louis, MO to San Francisco, CA. By the late 19th century, Fort Stockton had become a center for the sheep- and cattle-ranching industries, and in 1926, the opening of an oilfield spurred an economic boom.
A good place to visit soon after arriving in town is the Fort Stockton Visitor’s Center, which is located in the original 1911 Railroad Depot. History buffs in particular will enjoy touring Historic Fort Stockton, which has three buildings from the original Officers’ Row, the original Guard House, original parade ground, and two Enlisted Men’s Barracks and Kitchens, which were constructed from original blueprints. Another fascinating landmark is the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum, which provides a glimpse into Old West life. Golfers will delight in playing the home course of a top PGA contender; oenophiles will enjoy tasting the bounty of the largest winery in the state; and be sure to get a photo of the world’s second-largest roadrunner statue, Paisano Pete!
