A great introduction into the charm of Columbia starts with a trip to the Ragtag Cinema downtown. Skip the boxy megaplex and experience independent and foreign films in a hip setting. The foyer of the theater houses a bakery which transforms into a bar in the afternoons/evenings. Watch a flick in a leather sofa room or garage sale castoff furniture room for a more intimate viewing experience. Escape the city and get some fresh air at the Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, where there are enough trails available to fit your time frame or fitness level. One must-see is the Rock Bridge, a bridge of rock that is pierced by the creek that flows through a cave.
If you happen to be walking around the University of Missouri campus, drop-by the Museum of Art and Archaeology. It is a small university museum with a pleasantly robust collection of both art and archaeological treasures.
If you are visiting during the fall months, get lost in the corn maze at Shryocks Callaway Farms. This is easily the most fun you will have running through the maze—remember to bring a flashlight if you visit at nighttime! The less adventurous need not to worry—they can check out the barn full of baby animals and enjoy some apple cider and hot chocolate. Get a taste of the city’s flourishing music scene and visit The Blue Note for exciting live entertainment, great beer and stunning architecture once you are inside. There is no bad seat in the house and during the summer months, it presents its 9th Street Summerfest outdoor concert series. A recreational dreamland, Finger Lakes State Park has miles of dirt bike trails, excellent areas for fishing and a beach area to swim.
