This barrier island on the Jersey shore of the Atlantic Ocean was first inhabited by Native Americans who lived along the Absecon Creek. They named the island Absegami, meaning little water. Although the translation suggests a dry environment, the island actually has important waterways that caught the attention of early European settlers. These settlers took advantage of the waterways and made a living out of clamming and oystering in the area. In 1785, Jeremiah Leeds became the first permanent settler on the island. Many of the homes on the island were built by Jeremiah’s descendants until 1854, and some of these homes can be seen today.
Aside from the usual Oceanside activities like swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing, the island has a variety of attractions to keep everyone’s interests piqued. The Absecon Lighthouse, Atlantic City Arts Center and Atlantic City Historical Museum are great ways to understand the area’s history with a glance into the past. The historic lighthouse, also the tallest of New Jersey’s lighthouses, was built in 1857 and has spectacular views of the New Jersey shore and Atlantic City’s Boardwalk, beaches and sights.
You can trek along the world-famous Atlantic City boardwalk which has casinos, two amusement parks, the Boardwalk Arcade, Historic Boardwalk Hall and a variety of shops and restaurants with the beach and ocean serving as the perfect backdrop.
