Originally home to Arapaho Indians and herds of antelope and buffalo, the land that would become Westminster received national attention after gold was discovered in the South Platte River Valley in 1858. The promise of fortune and the Land Act of 1862 encouraged many settlers from the east to make Colorado their home instead of heading on to California. The area saw its first white settler in 1870, Pleasant DeSpain, and became known as DeSpain Junction.
After a couple of name changes, the town became incorporated in 1911 and was named in honor of Westminster University. Although the university is no longer in existence, its main building still stands prominently, overlooking Denver. Westminster Castle--or the Pillar of Fire building--is an excellent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A trip to City Hall promises visitors a fantastic view of the Rocky Mountains–after they climb the 181 stairs to the top of the bell tower! There are also sculpture gardens located around the building that are pleasurable to walk around. The whole family will enjoy one of the town’s most popular attractions, the Butterfly Pavilion, a lush conservatory home to 1,200 free-flying butterflies, including the gorgeous Blue Morpho Butterfly. And there is something for everyone at the Westminster Promenade, an outdoor pedestrian village that offers restaurants and cafes, a movie theater, sculptures, interactive water features, walking trails and a three-rink ice arena.
Westminster's central location between Denver and Boulder puts it within easy reach of major business centers, retail centers, and a variety of entertainment and recreational facilities. Also, Denver International Airport is just a short 30-minute drive away.
