Greenville was founded in 1815; three years prior to Illinois becoming a state. In 1872, it was incorporated as a city. Take a walk through the historic downtown area. Many of the buildings have been restored, and some of them have been adorned with murals. Browse the local specialty boutiques and antique malls to find unique treasures. You can also see the Andrew Carnegie Library on Main Street. The library was built in the 1903 with money received from the entrepreneur and philanthropist. To learn more about the area’s history, visit the Holies-Davis Historical Museum. It’s located in a former residence built in the early 1870s and preserves and displays items that are important to Bond County’s history.
The American Farm Heritage Museum is another great place to visit while you’re in town. This museum incudes a permanent farm machinery display and a revolving display of small collections to showcase the country’s agricultural heritage. And if you want to see where Abraham Lincoln gave a speech during his campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1858, take a trip to South 5th Street. There is a stone placed on that spot to commemorate the speech.
