Located just an hour east of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Menomonie is a city of around 16,000 people. Start your trip by heading to the city’s Visitor Center. It’s located downtown in the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce office. You can pick up maps and brochures and chat with staff and volunteers to plan out your visit. While you’re downtown, be sure to take a stroll through the area to browse local shops and see historic sites like the Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater. Built in 1889, the Victorian-era theater is downtown’s “crown jewel.” It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it features a year-round performing arts season. The beautiful Lake Menomin runs through downtown. Cast a line in the lake to catch Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Panfish, Notrhern Pike and Walleye. Menomonie is known as a bicycle-friendly city, and the Red Cedar State Trail is great for bikers and hikers who want to enjoy a scenic 14.5-mile journey along the Red Cedar River. For more trail options, take a trip to Hoffman Hills Recreation Area. Located northeast of the city, it features recreational trails, a one-mile wetland trail, 15 acres of restored prairie land and a 60-foot observation tower. Menomonie is also home to the University of Wisconsin-Stout. It’s a member of the University of Wisconsin System, and it was named after its founder, politician and businessman James Huff Stout.
