SELMA’S GOT STORIES, SHOPPING AND SINGIN’

Chartered in 1873, Selma has a variety of districts, homes and other buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Everitt P. Stevens House was the site of the last Grand Review of the Confederate Army on April 6, 1865, after its defeat at the Battle of Bentonville. Selma is also home to the Mitchener Station, built in 1855 and thought to be the oldest surviving train station in North Carolina. Atkinson’s Old Grist Mill—built in 1757—is still operating as the only water-powered grist mill in a four-county area. The mill offers tours and sells its products to local restaurants and the public.

For even more Selma history visitors can head to Historic Union Station—which was built in 1924, closed in 1971, opened as a museum in 1976, became a train station again in 1982—in 2002 it was fully restored and now features Amtrak trains daily. Located in the heart of Selma’s antique shopping district, the Max G. Creech Selma Historical Museum collects, preserves and displays items of local importance.
