If you’re looking for a homely but bustling local favourite, Cataract on Paterson is an award-winning restaurant that combines regional flavours with local passion. Opening in 2013, this is where you’ll find delights such as the bourbon and coke pork ribs, beer battered gummy shark and house made potato gnocchi.

This innovative foodie favourite is also known for being ‘the home of the stone grill’ – take a seat and be part of the experience as you cook your meal on a 400ºc volcanic stone. You can also enjoy a daily ‘surprise dish’, where you get to sample one of the chef’s innovative dishes.

One of the top cafes in Launceston, Great Scot Cafe serves all day breakfast and lunch with specialty coffee in the heart of the city. Start the day by tucking into some fritters with dukkah eggs or eggs benny with halloumi, or sit back and relax for lunch with a bowl of chilli prawn pasta. Samuel Pepys Cafe

Another top cafe near the heart of the action, Samuel Pepys Cafe, also offers a highly recommended breakfast and lunch menu from Monday to Saturday. Start the day off big here with an eggs benedict extravaganza or a fungi fiesta - a hearty plateful of pan-fried mixed mushrooms and Persian fed - or sink your teeth into Kylie’s KFC Waffle - a special recipe of fried chicken and drizzled maple syrup. Lunch also goes large, with Bang Bang Calamari and fish and chips extravaganza.

The popular and stylish Black Cow Bistro is one of the best places to eat in Launceston if you’re looking for a steak in the heart of Launceston. Definitely one of the best bars in Launceston - and a haven for spirit enthusiasts - The Barrel Collective showcases Tasmania's finest beers, gins, whisky and wine. Specialising in Tasmanian drinks, the staff also know their way around a cocktail shaker. Some of the makers behind the flavours include the local Spotty Dog brewery, home to the Cali XPA, and 7K who are known for their Raspberry Gin. The Royal Oak Hotel

A classic pub and much-loved favourite amongst foodies and music goers alike, The Royal Oak Hotel has been a local institution since 1850. Dining offers a classic pub menu with mighty fine seasonal options - from charcuterie plates to mushroom and truffle ravioli and slow cooked lamb shoulder. There are also plenty of local ciders, beers and wines to sample and enjoy.  The venue is also known for its live music and is regarded as one of Launceston’s best live music venues. A must-visit for beer aficionados, Saint John Craft Beer is home to over 100 craft tap and canned beers. The main bar wraps around a wall of taps directly connected to the cool room - this is where you’ll find the famous CANimal machine - a device designed to fill one-litre cans on the spot. You’ll also find plenty of unique spirits. For a feed step through to the back, where the Eats with Beats caravan sells burgers and fries.

 

Harvest Market 

The vibrant community hub is a source of community pride and one of the pillar that attracted the UNESCO City of Gastronomy recognition. Held weekly, the Harvest Market Launceston has been running for 10 years now, and today you’ll find more than 50 sellers packed with baked goods, fresh produce and delicious artisan treats. A true community gathering, this a fresh foodie experience.
