This 21,000-acre lake is situated in west fork of the San Jacinto River in Montgomery and Walker Counties, Texas. Even though it is named after the city, only a small portion of the lake is in Conroe, Texas. The lake’s water quality generally is good and clear, with an average depth of 20.5 feet and a maximum depth of 75 feet. The lake extends about 21 miles and covers 20,118 acres with 5,000 acres in Sam Houston National Forest. This reservoir was built as an alternate water supply by the City of Houston, the San Jacinto River Authority, and the Texas Water Development Board in January 1970. The lake was completed January 1973 and it was filled on October 31, 1973. Largemouth bass are the most sought after species in these waters. Catch rates are very good and the opportunity to catch a trophy bass is very high. Regulations for largemouth bass are in effect, with daily bag limits for all four species of black bass is five bass in any combination. In 1998, the biggest largemouth bass ever collected by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department in an electrofishing survey was taken from beneath a boat dock and weighed in at 14.1 pounds. A triploid grass carp permit is in effect on this lake so if one is caught, it must be immediately returned to the water unharmed. Channel catfish are by far the most abundant fish in the lake, offering anglers a good opportunity for good catches. Bluegill are the largest sized catch while black and white crappie recently are in abundance again thanks to the efforts of the Lake Conroe Restocking Association's spring stockings of advance juvenile crappie.
