Weather Patterns
Despite the blanket of heat and humidity, San Antonio draws most of its tourists during the summer. Keep to the shade and drink plenty of water as temperatures reach 100 F. Stash an umbrella in your bag if you plan on visiting in May, June or October, months that typically bring at least 4 inches of rain to the region. During San Antonio’s mild winters, temps linger in the 60s. The thermometer rarely climbs above the 70s between March and April, or between October and November.
Remember the Alamo and More
Delve into San Antonio’s storied past with a visit to the Alamo, the site of the famed attack by Mexico to retake the mission. Take a leisurely stroll down the winding Paseo del Rio—a 3-mile-long stone pathway that hugs the San Antonio River. It's lined with Tex-Mex restaurants, boutiques and roaming mariachi bands. Take the family on a thrill ride at Six Flags Fiesta Texas or cool off on the water slides at SeaWorld San Antonio. Retreat to the nearly 350-acre Brackenridge Park, where kids can enjoy rides on a carousel and miniature train, or visit furry friends at the San Antonio Zoo.
Doing Business
In a city known for its battle site, it’s fitting that the military is one of San Antonio’s major industries. Approximately 95,000 residents are employed by the military, many of who work out of the enormous Joint Base San Antonio, a complex that also houses Randolph Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston. Healthcare is the workforce runner up, employing 164,000-plus locals across hospitals, nursing homes, biomedical research institutions and pharmaceutical companies.
Getting Around Town
Major attractions are accessible on foot if you’re staying downtown, or you can hop on an old-fashioned streetcar. To reach outlying sites, such as Brackenridge Park and Six Flags Fiesta Texas, you’ll need to drive or take a city bus. Equipped with just two terminals, compact San Antonio International Airport makes flying easy with about 260 daily departures by 10 airlines. Based 15 minutes north of downtown, the airport also has numerous car rental agencies. Greyhound offers frequent service from other Texas cities, and Amtrak’s Sunset Limited—which travels between Los Angeles and Orlando—arrives in the city three times a week. If you’re driving into San Antonio, Interstate 10 is the highway that runs from L.A. to Jacksonville, Florida.
