The annual Carnival season in New Orleans, Louisiana begins at the start of the Catholic season of Lent on January 6. The real celebrating begins in earnest on “Fat Tuesday,” the day before Ash Wednesday. This always falls 46 days before Easter and on any Tuesday between March 23 to April 25. The parades are organized by Carnival krewes, with the largest and most elaborate processions taking place the last five days of the season. Krewe float riders toss throws trinkets to the crowds like purple, green and gold plastic beads, decorated plastic throw cups and small inexpensive toys.
On the Thursday night before the big event, an all-women's parade featuring the Krewe of Muses, throws shoes to the spectators. Friday night features large satirical Krewe D’état Parades. There are several smaller neighborhood daytime parades roll on Saturday and Sunday with the celebrity-led Bacchus parade on Sunday night. Lundi Gras or "Fat Monday" features parades by the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club and Krewe of Rex, who will parade the following day and arrive by boat on the Mississippi River.
