This Massachusetts town is the second-largest municipality on Cape Cod, behind only Barnstable. It has seven historic districts, including four on the National Register of Historic Places: Falmouth Village Green, North Falmouth Village, Waquoit and West Falmouth Village. It lies on the southwestern tip of Cape Cod and is bordered by Bourne and Sandwich to the north, Mashpee to the east, Vineyard Sound to the south, and Buzzards Bay to the west. It is approximately 3 1⁄3 miles north-northwest of Martha's Vineyard. Its southern shore is notable for a series of ponds and rivers spaced very closely together.
You can sail away on the Island Queen to Martha's Vineyard which is within just 35 minutes. One of the area’s most popular oceanfront attractions is Shining Sea Bikeway with its more than 17 miles of biking or walking trails extending from North Falmouth down to Woods Hole and revealing all the birds, turtles, flora and fauna of the area. Historic signposts in the vicinity include Highfield Hall, one of the early summer mansions in Cape Cod and one of the few remaining examples of Stick-style Queen Anne architecture in the Northeast.
The Nobska Lighthouse dates back to 1828 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. And you’ll want to stop by Woods Hole and see a real drawbridge operating in the middle of a busy Cape Cod town. The Falmouth Museums on the Green contain a plethora of stories and artifacts about this town going back to when the Colonial militia practiced there in the 1700s and the sea captains built their homes. Two 18th-century houses in the area display period furniture, art, textiles and exhibits that provide a glimpse into the town’s rich historic past.
