After it was encountered by French explorer, Samuel de Champlain, in 1609, the lake was the location of the Battle of Valcour Island in 1776 and the Battle of Champlain in 1814 during the War of 1812. The many ports of the lake served a commercial and military purpose in 18th and 19th centuries. The location of many historical events, the lake is also surrounded by speculation of a monster. Explorer Champlain and Native Americans who once inhabited the area reported seeing a large lake monster with impenetrable silver-gray scales. Although it is unidentified to date, it has been endearingly dubbed, “Champ,” and represents many local sports teams. The entire lake contains about 80 islands, three of which include four entire Vermont towns, with Burlington, Vermont being the largest city on the lake.
Even though many developed islands exist, the relatively undeveloped coastline of this lake makes for an abundance of recreational opportunities. Situated in Lake Champlain Valley between Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York means lots of greenery, wildlife, trails and parks. A causeway that was once travelled by trains is now the main three-mile marble trail in Colchester Park. It has been adapted and preserved as a recreational area for cyclists, anglers and runners. Point Au Roche State Park is also built with hiking and cross country skiing trails. Two roadways cross over the lake, connecting Vermont and New York so you can extend your trip from the lake to either of its neighboring cities. If you want to travel by water, take the ferry from lake to land. For a natural lake surrounded in history, mystery and outdoor fun, head to Lake Champlain.
