Overlooking the beautiful Murray River, in the heart of Australia’s ‘foodbowl’, Mildura is known for its lush pastures, rich citrus groves and innovative winemaking history. Take a trip along the river to Trentham Estate Winery. This the perfect place to appreciate the region’s wine heritage while enjoying the crisp lemon-blossom aromas of a Vermentino or a vibrant Shiraz. The restaurant also pairs local produce beautifully with their wines. Shepparton

Since the mid-1800s the Goulburn Wine Region, stretching from Shepparton to Nagambie and Echuca, has been known for its unique grape growing conditions. Not far from Shepparton, Tallis Wines covers 60 acres of farmland topped with Shiraz, Viognier, Riesling and most recently Tempranillo vines. Broken River Vineyards is another gem tucked away close to town, where a family team runs a boutique winery known for its signature Shiraz.

A great way to truly sample the flavours of the terroir is on a day trip from Shepparton. Start with a scenic drive to Tahbilk Winery, a highly-acclaimed must-stop. Since the 1890s, this estate has been producing generation-defining Marsanne, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The on-site restaurant offers delicious rustic meals sourced from local harvests. Overlooking the beautiful Goulburn River, Mitchelton wines is home to the trophy-winning Print Shiraz. Book a cellar door tasting and pair your wines with local cheese.

Dating back to 1864, All Saints Estate is a slice of winemaking history. Established on a plot near ‘Sunday Creek’ before moving to a fertile plot which is now home to the iconic ‘castle’, this vineyard is today known for producing elegant Durif and Muscat.

Another region mainstay is Campbells Wines. With over 150 years of winemaking heritage, this top-drop winery is renowned for its luscious Muscat and Topaque. For a taste of small-batch variety, Scion Wine is a family-run winery that crafts creative and experimental labels. Take a tour and enjoy the vineyard’s modern take on the local classics, produced from the historic four acre Terravinia Vineyard, which covers the northern slope overlooking the Murray River.

Tucked in a converted heritage bluestone building, Provenance Winery produces some of Geelong’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Visit the 1870s cellar door and enjoy a tipple overlooking the Barwon River. You can also relax with water views and a grazing platter with a glass or two at Terindah Estate. There are some great dining and tipple options here, from the Deck Lounge that overlooks bay views to Peter’s Odyssey Tram Bar and al fresco dining at ‘The Shed’.
