Underrated Germany: Places to Visit in Germany in Summer

Summer holidays go hand in hand with sun, sea, and sand, right? And the locations they evoke in the mind tend to be images of the Caribbean, the Maldives, the south of France… but what if we told you that you could have an extraordinary summer break in Germany? It’s not all bratwurst and big buildings (although they are pretty impressive) – thanks to its varied landscape, Germany has some true hidden gems and some fascinating cities that promise to provide you with all the ingredients for an incredible summer holiday recipe that will have you blown away. From the beer festivals in Munich to hiking and biking in the Alps, whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, a beach bum, a walker or a wine connoisseur, Germany is the place to visit in summer.

The Weather

Don’t be fooled by the stock images of German Christmas markets blanketed by ivory-white snow – European summers are a thing! Snowy mountains transform into verdant alpines, and while you won’t be feeling tropical temperatures, the weather in Germany in summer can easily reach the mid-20s and above with a healthy breeze to keep you cool on the warmer days. It’s perfect for those who don’t want to experience the harsh sun found in southern Mediterranean climates yet still partake in everything those destinations have to offer.

The Festivals in Frankfurt

What’s summer without a few festivals? The open air, the sun on your skin, a beer in hand, music vibrations from the main stage… It’s truly one of the best memory-making experiences one can have. But festivals in Frankfurt extend beyond your traditional music ones – like the Rheingau Wine Festival. Offering the opportunity to sample a collection of 600 red, white, and sparkling wines from the Rheingau region, this relaxed street fair-style festival runs through the middle of August for an experience you won’t forget (or maybe you will!). Even if festivals aren’t your thing, but you love to enjoy an al fresco beverage or two in the park, Frankfurt has an open drinking law, which means you can indulge in your drinks while sitting in one of the many open green spaces throughout the city. Explore more activities Frankfurt has to offer here.

The Atmosphere in Dresden

Dresden stands tall on the banks of the river Elbe, which is really where most of the summer fun takes place. There’s something majestic about being by the water when the weather is warm, and the striking city backdrop is the perfect accompaniment. Join locals and tourists alike basking in the heat on the riverside – grab a takeaway from one of the many restaurants nearby and enjoy a picnic on the water or, if you prefer more action, cycle the length of the Elbe. Whenever you feel like stopping, the best way to cool off is to jump in the water!

The Charm in Hamburg

Germany is full of storybook cities, but nowhere does it quite like Hamburg. Located in the north of the country, it’s the perfect getaway all year round, but summertime boasts beautifully long days where the sun rises before 5 a.m. and doesn’t set until 10 p.m. at the earliest. On warmer days, spend them exploring outdoors – Alster Lake is the perfect place for some watersports, enjoy one of the many beaches, visit Ohlsdorf, the biggest rural cemetery and park in the world, or have a wander around the Speicherstadt neighbourhood. Trust us, there’s German charm for days! Oh, Hamburg is a foodie’s heaven too, with traditional delicacies and international favourites found on every corner-and, of course, plenty of beer to wash it down with.

The Beer Gardens in Munich

Speaking of beer, if there was one place to sample it, it’s Munich, home of Oktoberfest! This southern German city truly comes to life in the summer months and isn’t too hot, so you can walk or cycle around the best bits it has to offer. Palaces, museums, open-air markets, churches, parks, gardens… the list of cultural gems that can be found here is truly endless. The beer gardens are a huge draw here in the summer, too. Sit under the shade of chestnut trees and enjoy a cool brewski – Seehaus Garden and the Michaeligarten are ideal options if you want to admire views of the water while you drink.

The Culture in Berlin

Edge, excitement, and endless activities are what the German capital has to offer. Even if a city break isn’t on your radar this summer, Berlin must be the one exception, as it truly has something for everyone. Learning the history of Berlin will happen without you even trying, from the majestic Brandenburg Gate in the heart of the metropolis to the photo opportunities with soldiers at Checkpoint Charlie. Cool off from the city vibe with a swim at Strandbad Wannsee in Zehlendorf, a dip in Berlin’s largest swimming lake, Lake Müggelsee, or stand-up paddleboarding in the Spree. Catch a flick at one of the open-air cinemas in Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, and Rehberge or indulge in a sunset cocktail at a rooftop bar in Alexanderplatz for a fiery view of the TV Tower. We told you that there are endless activities!
