Established in 1945 to protect the last remaining old-growth hardwood-hemlock forest in Michigan, this state park offers more than 60,000 acres of wilderness. It’s a popular destination for visitors who want to see its towering woods, secluded streams, waterfalls, lakes and rivers. Animals that can be seen in the park include black bears, bobcats, coyotes, deer, foxes, lynx, porcupines and more. Start your wilderness journey at the Visitor Center. The center can provide information about the park’s features and ranger-led activities, and there is a Visitor’s Center Nature Trail that highlights area wildlife and other features of the hardwood forest.
During the winter months, the park features a ski area. Within the park, there are a variety of backcountry trails that take you through the area. Some trail options are the Lake Superior Trail and Summit Peak Tower Trail. The Lake Superior Trail is the longest trail. It follows the shore of Lake Superior – offering spectacular views. The Summit Peak Tower Trail gives hikers the chance to visit the highest point in the park. One of the park’s most well-known attractions is Lake of the Clouds. It’s located between two mountain ridges. In addition to being well-known, this scenic spot is one of the park’s most photographed areas. To get a great view, head up to the Lake of the Clouds Overlook, which sits at the western end of the former M-107 highway.
