Spaniards first settled here in 1865, naming their settlement Agua Negra Chiquita, which translates to “Tiny Black Water.” That name was changed in 1890 in honor of a chapel built by the city’s founder, Don Celso Baca -- he named the chapel after his mother, Rosa, and Saint Rose of Lima. With a legacy of railroads, ranching, cowboys, Billy the Kid, and Route 66, this is the true American West – a piece of history and Americana for all to experience. The stretch of Route 66 that passes through Santa Rosa is part of film history – it is featured in the movie version of John Steinbeck’s epic novel, “The Grapes of Wrath.” The numerous natural, spring-fed lakes and clear mineral springs that exist in Santa Rosa are an anomaly among the red mesas in the arid, desert climate of the Southwest.
The most famous of these lakes is the Blue Hole, an 81-foot-deep natural artesian spring with beautiful blue water that remains at a constant 62 degrees, allowing for year-round scuba diving! Conde Nast Traveler declared the Blue Hole to be among the top 11 “Best Natural Swimming Holes in the United States!” No wonder Santa Rosa has been designated as “The Scuba Diving Capital of the Southwest!” Other attractions in the city include Park Lake, which is the Southwest’s largest swimming pool and boasts a 32-foot waterslide and pedal boats. In addition to scuba diving, snorkeling, and swimming, visitors to Santa Rosa can enjoy fishing, waterskiing, jet skiing, windsurfing, hiking, biking, golfing, sightseeing, camping, and picnicking. The Route 66 Auto Museum presents a fascinating glimpse into the history of “America’s Highway,” as do picturesque stone buildings in the historic district and historic roadside cafes that still serve up delicious meals to hungry travelers!
