The Cherokee Tribe of Native Americans were the first inhabitants of this land – numerous springs that provided a steady source of water attracted both people and animals to the area. One of the first white settlers, Andrew Taylor, married a Cherokee woman and built a log cabin on the site that is now occupied by the downtown Cleveland Post Office. His home was known as “Taylor’s Place” and was a popular resting point for travelers due to its proximity to the springs. In 1837, when the area had become quite busy with trading and commerce and had a population of 400, the town of Cleveland was founded and named in honor of Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, a Revolutionary War hero. A native of North Carolina, Colonel Cleveland had commanded troops at the Battle of Kings Mountain.
The town was designated as the county seat for Bradley County in 1838, and it was incorporated in 1842. An extremely popular attraction in Cleveland is the Cherokee National Forest – its breathtaking beauty and plethora of outdoor recreational activities combine for a fantastic time for everyone! Visitors enjoy a beautiful drive through the park, and adventurous folks can participate in a wide array of activities, including hiking, biking, boating, fishing, zip lining, picnicking, and camping! Whitewater rafting on both the Ocoee River and the Hiwassee Rivers lure thousands of people to this gorgeous area.
