STERLING: WHERE HISTORY IS EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK
Sterling is a city that’s rich in history—so much so that many of its attractions and events have noteworthy stories to tell. Several locations around the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Arcola Elementary School, the Broad Run Bridge and Tollhouse, and Vestal’s Gap Road and Lanesville Historic District. Nearby hotels in Sterling, VA—especially those from the Choice Hotels family—offer convenient accommodations for visitors.
The 357-acre Claude Moore Park and Recreation Sportplex features a recreation center with an Olympic-size indoor pool, exercise area, baseball/softball fields, a nature area with hiking trails, and the park itself. Running across the park is the historic Vestal’s Gap Road, which was a trail first used by Native Americans; George Washington later traveled the road frequently between his home at Mount Vernon and the western frontier. The park also includes the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum where visitors can milk a life-like cow, take part in hands-on classes, and explore the general store as they experience the life of a Sterling farmer.
While Sterling’s Algonkian Regional Park features the “Downpour Algonkian” with a unique pool, water slides and interactive splash tower, the park is also home to the Algonkian Writers Conference—which holds writing workshops and other events throughout the year for writers in all genres. The conference began in 2002 with small workshops at Algonkian Park, but now include larger events in New York and California as well.
