Start your visit to Opelika with a few rounds at the Grand National Golf Course, where the links course will test your stamina and the lakes course your skill. If golf is not your game, then head over to do some antiquing at Angel’s Antiques and Flea Mall, where individual booths offer a tremendous range of new and old merchandise. The space is large and there are hundreds of dealers offering you the opportunity to find that special something you have been dreaming about. After the golf and the shopping, a little culture is in order, and you will find it at the Museum of East Alabama—along with a wide assortment of exhibits that include musical instruments, military pieces, medical and sports memorabilia, Native American artifacts and antique dolls and toys for your children.
If you would like to try some exercise of a different kind, then check out the Silver Lining Equestrian Center. The Center offers lessons, training and boarding, with riding lessons that focus on safe, proper English riding technique. You may not yet be “shopped out” at Angel’s Antiques, and if that is the case, you might want to visit the Gallery, a shop located in a converted 19th-century saloon that sells a little of everything. It is a great place to spend an hour poking about.
Opelika has a long history, dating back to the late 1930s, and if you would like to get a little of its flavor, then head over to the Historic Old Town to see some of the town’s oldest buildings that today house shops, restaurants and more. If you pay attention, a stroll here will give you a sense of the town’s past as a railroad hub.
