Start your trip by stepping back into the Civil War period at Praters Mill. Explore the 1855 grist mill that was used as a camp site by soldiers from both sides. The tour also features a cotton gin, general store and a train caboose. Pay your respect to the 421 unknown soldiers that died in Dalton hospitals during the Civil War at the Dalton Confederate Cemetery. Take a stroll around this large cemetery and observe more memorials and monuments that honor the individuals who lost their lives during the war.
Train fans will enjoy the Dalton Freight Depot in downtown Dalton for its live audio feed from train radios and proximity to active train tracks. In addition to the modern train features, this Depot has plenty of display cases on railroad and Civil War history, as well as a 1949 Southern "Crescent City" Pullman car outside.
Take advantage of the Georgia weather and get outdoors at the 300-acre park, Heritage Point Park. With an abundance of fields and courts, there will be enough open space (and picnic shelters) to have your own plot of privacy, or to have a peaceful walk along the trails. Go to the site where the Great Train Chase of 1862 and battles in Tunnel Hill, GA took place at the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center. The 1,477-foot tunnel and museum offer a glimpse into one of the oldest railroad tunnels south of the Mason-Dixon Line as well as civil war artifacts from local family ancestry.
