Known as “Chicago’s front yard,” the park sits on 319 acres in the city’s central business district. The area, which is bordered on the east by Lake Michigan, was originally named Lake Park when it was founded in 1847. It was renamed to honor President Ulysses S. Grant in 1901. In 1979, Pope John Paul II delivered an outdoor mass to a large crowd here. And in 2008 the park was the site where President Barack Obama delivered his Election Day victory speech. The park also hosts some of Chicago’s biggest festivals, including the Taste of Chicago, the Grant Park Music Festival and the Chicago Blues Festival.
