Originally a French trading post built near a spring and a salt lick, this community was marked on an 1837 map as “Salt Spring.” The town was founded with its present name in 1857. The sulfur springs here began to be exploited for their medicinal benefits in 1840, and by the latter half of the 19th century, French Lick was renowned throughout the United States as a spa town. Casinos built in the early 20th century attracted such celebrities as composer Irving Berlin, boxer Joe Louis, and infamous gangster Al Capone. And while he was attending a National Governors’ Convention in town, Franklin Delano Roosevelt announced his intention to run for president of the United States. However, the town is best known for its hometown basketball star, Larry Bird, who went on to become a legend in professional basketball. He started for French Lick/West Baden's high school team, Springs Valley High School, where he left as the school's all-time scoring leader. In his later basketball career, Bird was given the nickname "the Hick from French Lick"!
