The land on which McKinney is situated was donated for a town site by William Davis on March 24, 1849. He gave 120 of his 3,000 acres for the town, and it was incorporated ten years later. McKinney is the county seat of Collin County, and both the city and the county itself were named in honor of Collin McKinney, who was a congressman for the Red River district of the Republic of Texas, the author of a bill establishing counties in the northern part of the state, and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836. Although growth and development were initially slow here, the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1872 spurred a period of unprecedented growth. That growth continues today, and McKinney is justifiably proud that a major magazine named it the “Best Place to Live in the United States."
