The formation of this city dates back to the 19th century. But while settlers arrived in Tomball in the 1800s, the area really started to boom in 1906. That’s when railroad engineers noticed that the area would make an ideal railroad stop because it sat between the low hills of Texas and the flat coastal pains of the Gulf Coast area. Thomas Henry Ball, a Texas attorney who represented the Trinity and Brazos Family Railroad, convinced the company to run its rail line through the city’s downtown. The arrival of the railroad gave a big boost to the local economy, and in 1907 the city was named Tom Ball after the influential attorney. It was later shortened to one word, Tomball. One of Tomball’s biggest events is the Tomball German Heritage Festival, which takes place in the spring and celebrates the city’s German roots with food, music and more.
