The land on which Mount Pleasant is located was once the home of the Native American Ojibwa (Saginaw Chippewa Tribe); the Treaty of 1855 relocated them to the Isabella Indian Reservation, which is adjacent to the city. Their rich culture and history is celebrated today in Mount Pleasant at such institutions as the Ziibiwing Cultural Center, which provides an enriching and diverse educational experience, and at such events as the annual Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Pow Wow, which features such native traditions as dancing, storytelling, arts and crafts, and authentic foods. Mount Pleasant was established in 1831 and is the county seat of Isabella County.
