Settlers first arrived in this area in 1819 – they were attracted by an ample supply of water and timber and the region’s proximity to the Missouri River, which was the transportation route of U.S. westward expansion. By 1822, the settlement and frontier trading post had grown large enough to be designated as the county seat for Clay County. Liberty was incorporated as a town in 1829 – it is the second-oldest incorporated town west of the Mississippi River! History buffs in particular will enjoy touring this city – it is home to five historic districts, six districts on the National Register of Historic Places, and a thriving downtown Historic Square. Among the most popular of the historic landmarks are the Clay County Savings Bank (now the Jesse James Bank Museum) and the 1833 Liberty Jail. In 1866, the bank was the site of the first successful daytime bank robbery -- it was allegedly committed by Jesse James and his gang. The jail is best known for its most famous prisoner, Joseph Smith, the 1st president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. He and six of his followers were incarcerated here during the winter of 1839.
