NORTH CAROLINA ON DISPLAY
Opened in 1943, Raleigh Durham Airport offers a unique combination of passenger experience, art, culture and local flair. Two observation decks are available to the public. One is near the air traffic control tower and park-and-ride lot #2, which has a playground modeled to look like the runways, with air traffic communications broadcast over a loudspeaker. The other deck is inside the General Aviation Terminal, which allows for both indoor and outdoor observation, and includes the Crosswinds Café. In addition, North Carolina’s first airport-based USO location opened to serve military families in 2004.
Throughout the terminals and grounds, visitors see 15 works of art by both locally and nationally renowned artists. These pieces all focus on a “mind-made, hand-made” theme that highlights the Research Triangle region’s strengths in education, medicine and technology. These sculptures, murals and glass creations also showcase the region’s heritage of fine arts and crafts.
Local music and culture are on display all year long, but only once a year will you hear the sweet sounds of the RDU Bluegrass Music Series. This annual series is timed to welcome the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual event, as well as the World of Bluegrass Street Festival every fall. Whether it’s dining on authentic North Carolina barbecue or fresh-caught seafood, stocking up on N.C. sports-team apparel, or sampling the variety of local wines, visitors can take great memories and souvenirs of North Carolina back to their hotels near RDU Airport—and then on home!
