Settlers came to Mansfield in the 1840s and built it up as a rural community. R.S. Man and Julian Field built a mill that helped develop the city into what it is today. In fact, the community grew around this mill build by Man and Field who eventually combined their names to create the city’s moniker of Mansfield. You can explore what is now a suburban community by walking or biking through one of the 14 beautiful parks and their three and a half miles of trails.  Get a look into the city’s wildlife at the parks and at the Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park. Located at the intersection of two ecoregions of the eastern Cross Timbers and the northern Blackland Prairies, the park is home to unique plant and animal life throughout its 80 acres. Go from bird watching to window shopping at downtown Mansfield, one of the state’s oldest continuing downtown areas. This historic downtown is the heartbeat of the city where you can enjoy restaurants and shops to live music at the restored Farr Best Theatre. You will even see the grist mill that helped drive the growth of the town to what it is today.  Downtown also hosts many events and festivals including the Hot Beats and Cold Brews Concert Series, Pickle Parade and Palooza and Wurstfest, a German-themed festival with a variety of activities including dog races, live music and of course, lots of bratwurst.
