This town in Maricopa County is one of the fastest-growing cities in Arizona. Fountain Hills is 12 miles northeast of Scottsdale and 15 miles north of Mesa. A proposed dam near the Granite Reef would have led to the creation of a lake at Fort McDowell Indian Reservation. The dam was never built due to local opposition but work on the planned community had already begun and Fountain Hills was formally established in December of 1970. The Fountain was conceived as a dramatic man-made attraction to accentuate the natural beauty of the surrounding desert hills and mountains like Four Peaks, the Superstition and the McDowell Mountains. It can be seen from almost every vantage point in Fountain Hills. Its spray reaches 560 feet and is three times as high as Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone Park, 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. You can see The Fountain from The Avenue of the Fountains, a commercial thoroughfare in Fountain Hills.
The center section of this palm tree-lined avenue has additional fountain, plus pools and waterfalls. You can enjoy more than 50 miles of multi-use trails, and spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges plus deer, javelinas, birds and coyotes at McDowell Mountain Regional Park. It is located in the lower Verde River basin. Also in the Fort McDowell area is the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, with two 18-hole public courses and a full-service clubhouse. Other 18-hole championship golf courses in Fountain Hills include Desert Canyon Golf Club and Eagle Mountain Golf Club. The Fountain Hills Community Theater is another one of Fountain Hills' unique attractions, offering year-round cultural opportunities. Higher educational facilities are available at Scottsdale Community College, Rio Salado Community College and Mesa Community College.
