Founded in 1848, Georgetown is the county seat of Williamson County and is named in honor of George Washington Glasscock, who, along with Thomas B. Huling, donated the land on which the city was built. Originally a “frontier town of the most common type – a mean-looking, tough town composed mainly of shacks and log cabins,” the town experienced a robust period of economic development and expansion from 1880 to 1910. During those golden years, settlers and merchants prospered, a limestone courthouse was erected on the town square, the railroad arrived, and Southwestern University -- the first college in the entire state of Texas -- opened its doors on the eastern edge of town. The fine Victorian architecture constructed during those years can still be seen today. In fact, Georgetown Square has been declared as the “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas”, and the city is justifiably proud to have been the 1997 Great American Main Street Award Winner! The Williamson County Courthouse Historic District, which is comprised of 46 structures, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a delight to tour. Both walking and driving tours of historic sites in the city are offered.
Georgetown is renowned as the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas” due to the abundance of these wildflowers that bloom throughout the city each spring. The annual Red Poppy Festival, which is held in the beautiful and historic downtown square, attracts approximately 30,000 visitors. Attendees enjoy live entertainment, a parade, a car show, arts and crafts, and refreshments. Visitors to Georgetown can also browse through antique stores, unique boutiques, retail shops, interesting art galleries and fascinating museums, and enjoy theater productions, live music, public art exhibits and open-air markets. Restaurants and taverns welcome guests in for a delicious meal and a refreshing drink. Relish exploring the lovely city of Georgetown!
