Brothers-in-law Louis Massey and Peter Bouchea founded this picturesque town – which they named “Willow River” -- in the summer of 1840. William Steets arrived at about the same time, and later that same year, Joseph Sauperson (commonly known as Joe LaGrue) took up residence. These four men are considered Hudson's original inhabitants. The name of the town was later changed to “Buena Vista” by Judge Joel Foster after he returned from fighting in the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War. This name was appropriate, as it translates from the Spanish to “Beautiful View”! Hudson's first mayor, Almon Day Gray, petitioned to change the name of the city to "Hudson" in 1852 because the bluffs along the St. Croix River reminded him of the Hudson River in his native New York. A large number of settlers arrived in the 1850s and 1860s, and many of Hudson's current residents are descendants of those settlers. U.S. Highway 12 once crossed the St. Croix River on a toll bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota; the long causeway extending to the former bridge location is now open to the public as a pedestrian walkway.Visitors to this charming town have an abundance of fun activities to choose from and a panoramic view to enjoy while doing them!
