The town of Herndon was named after American naval explorer William Louis Herndon. You can learn more about the explorer and the town by visiting the Herndon Depot Museum. The museum is housed in the former railroad depot, which was the site of “Mosby’s Raid on Herndon Station,” a Civil War battle that occurred on St. Patrick’s Day in 1863. Led by Captain John S. Mosby, the Confederate Army surprised the Union troops guarding the station and captured officers, soldiers and horses without any Confederate casualties. The museum features railroad memorabilia, local artifacts and other displays; and the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In downtown Herndon, the Herndon ArtSpace is a community art gallery that provides local artists a space to showcase their work.
