This man-made lake covers 692 miles of shoreline and borders the counties of Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Gwinnett and Lumpkin. Its construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was completed in 1957 and its purpose was to provide hydroelectricity, navigation, flood control and water supply for Atlanta. Some 20 miles downstream from the lake is Morgan Falls Dam, which was raised to insure the flow of water going to Atlanta was not impeded. Visitors looking to dock their boats or rent a fishing vessel on the lake go to Bald Ridge Marina, which is spread out over 35 acres and has one of the largest and most accessible fuel docks nearby.
There are a wide range of activities to be found on this multi-purpose lake, including the family fun park on Lanier Islands called LanierWorld, where children and parents can enjoy Georgia’s largest wave pool and the Raging River, a waterslide full of sharp twists and intense rapids.
