Start with a tour of the Old Governor’s Mansion, which is now an historic house museum (and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution), as well as the Old State Capital Building, where state representatives voted to separate from the Union. It’s also one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the region.
For more Antebellum architecture, head over to the Lockerly Arboretum. Once the home of a wealthy local family, it’s now a museum set in the middle of 50 acres of beautiful grounds that provide both indoor and outdoor “classrooms” for visitors, school groups and others. Make sure you check out the view from the upstairs front windows over the fountain and gardens.
Something the whole family can enjoy is a self-guided tour of Andalusia, the family farm where the writer Flannery O’Connor lived when she wrote some of her most notable works. Admission is free and tours are available Thursday through Sunday.
Milledgeville is also home to the legendary Central State Hospital and the Central State Hospital Museum. This museum is interesting, it depicts the history of treatment in the nation for mental health disorders and includes showcases of historic medical tools and even some personal effects of past patients.
The Milledgeville Trolley Tour is another awesome way to visit all the famous sights around town. It includes visits to places you would have to arrange individual appointments to see otherwise, like Brown-Stetson-Sanford House and more. Start booking your Milledgeville, GA hotel today!
