The Hawaiian Islands, or as the natives call it “Mokupuni o Hawai‘I,” are comprised of eight major islands, several atolls and smaller islets in the North Pacific Ocean. Together they extend some 1,500 miles from the island of Hawaii in the south to northernmost Kure Atoll. This group was once named the “Sandwich Islands” by British explorer Captain James Cook after the 4th Earl of Sandwich. This name was in use until the 1840s, until it adopted its contemporary name from the name of the main island, Hawaii Island. This main island is also referred to as the “Big Island,” because it is nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. You’ll find all but two of the world's climatic zones within this island’s shores. Natural attractions on this island include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the snowy peaks of Maunakea and the green rainforests of the Hamakua Coast.
The other seven islands are no shrinking islets, either. Maui is full of quaint towns, artist communities and local favorites that have been around for generations, and it is home to the iconic Iao Needle. You can learn how to surf the waves in Oʻahu, kayak in Kauaʻi, live the traditional islanders in Molokaʻi and hike the lunar-like landscape of Lānaʻi. The other islands include Niʻihau, generally off-limits to all but relatives of the island's owners, U.S. Navy personnel and government officials, hence its nickname "The Forbidden Isle.” And there is Kahoʻolawe, the only island that is uninhabited.
