The City of Anderson is named for Chief William “Adam” Anderson, whose mother was a Delaware (Lenape) Indian and whose father was of Swedish descent. Settlers referred to the village as “Anderson Town”; in 1844, the name was shortened by the Indiana legislature to "Anderson." The community was incorporated as a town three separate times –reverting back to village status in between – before being incorporated as a city in 1865. The discovery of natural gas in 1887 brought about a population boom and economic growth, as industries that could use the gas moved here. Visitors to Anderson today have a variety of fun and interesting activities to choose from! A great place to go soon after arriving in town is the Anderson Madison County Visitors Bureau, which provides an abundance of information about touring the city and its surrounding county.
Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy visiting Mounds State Park, which features 10 unique earthworks built by prehistoric Indians known as the Adena-Hopewell people. The largest earthwork, the Great Mound, is believed to have been constructed around 160 B.C. Archaeological surveys indicate the mounds were used as gathering places for religious ceremonies, from where astronomical alignments could be viewed. The Nature Center at the park includes a wildlife viewing room, animal displays, and interactive games; and naturalist-led hikes and interpretive programs are offered every weekend throughout the year. The Anderson Center for the Arts is located in the historic 1905 Carnegie Library building, and it features permanent collections, exhibits, tours, and an interactive children’s gallery.
The performing arts can be enjoyed at both Anderson’s Mainstage Theatre and at The Paramount Theatre and Ballroom, which opened its doors in 1929 and has retained its opulent décor. Golfers can enjoy four different courses; unique boutiques and stores welcome browsers; and restaurants and taverns invite guests to enjoy delicious meals and refreshing drinks.
