In the spring of 1973, some cornfields on a family farm just east of Des Moines were transformed into the beginnings of what is now Iowa’s largest tourist attraction. The farmhouse and some fir trees still stand today in the Iowa farm section of the park. Since its opening in August of 1974, the park has continuously expanded and added more and more rides, shows, games of skill, water rides, and landscaping. A western-themed area, "Outlaw Gulch", was built in 1993 on 12 acres at a cost of approximately five-million dollars, and the largest expansion since the park’s initial opening was completed in 2010 -- a waterpark called Adventure Bay. It includes a 25,000 square-foot wave pool, 20 waterslides, Iowa's longest Lazy River, a swimming pool with a swim-up bar, rental cabanas, food and retail stands, a sand beach, and a sun deck.
For the little ones, there is a kids’ activity pool, splash pad, and even their own swim-up bar! In June of 2014, a thrilling new ride was added, a 250-foot-tall swing ride called Storm Chaser. Even daredevils will be screaming while riding Storm Chaser! For those looking for a little less excitement, there are great water rides, a full array of children’s rides spread throughout the park, and a wide variety of shows and entertainment -- from song and dance to magic to live music. The park's official mascot is a dog named "Bernie Bernard." Park guides and maps are adorned with a cartoon drawing of Bernie, and a walk-around character poses for photos in the park. With more than 100 rides, shows, and attractions, including incredibly exciting rollercoasters and thrill-rides, everybody can have a blast at Adventureland Amusement Park.
