The newest of the Iowa Center venues, the Wells Fargo Arena opened in 2005. Every year, this 17,000-seat arena hosts the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic—a showcase of the top men’s college basketball programs in the State of Iowa (Drake University, the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa). In addition, three pro sports teams call the arena home, as well as the state’s high school championship tournaments in wrestling and both girls’ and boys’ basketball. The arena also hosts major concerts, which have featured artists such as Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy, Justin Bieber, the Eagles, The Who, and Jason Aldean. Other events at the arena have included Disney On Ice, Monster Jam, and the Harlem Globetrotters. Hy-Vee Hall is the state’s largest exhibit hall, featuring 100,000 square feet of exhibit space. The facility opened in 2004 and is connected to an additional 50,000 square feet of space in the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. The annual Iowa’s Premier Beer, Wine & Food Expo—presented by Hy-Vee—takes place in this venue, with more than 140 exhibitors and a unique shopping and sampling area for thousands of attendees.
The Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at Veterans Memorial was originally built in 1955 as an auditorium. It is the state’s largest ballroom (measuring 28,730 square feet), featuring 29 meeting rooms, and serving as a tribute to Iowa’s military past, present and future. It also served as the home to Drake University basketball, but reopened in 2012 as a state-of-the-art facility. It is connected to both Hy-Vee Hall and the Wells Fargo Arena.
