A MOUNTAIN RISES IN PHOENIX
In the middle of a 75.8-acre park, Camelback Mountain features two hiking trails that each ascend to the peak; the Echo Canyon Trail is 1.14 miles, and the Cholla Trail is 1.4 miles. Each of these trails is considered to be difficult, with steep grades, and can take a round trip time of anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. On the northern slope of the mountain is the Praying Monk rock formation, used for rock climbing. Its name refers to the formation’s shape, which resembles a man kneeling to pray. The eastern face of the formation has permanent anchor bolts so climbers can attach a belay rope.
Camelback Mountain is designated as a “Phoenix Point of Pride,” one of 33 notable landmarks and attractions in the City of Phoenix that are representative of Phoenix residents and visitors. The mountain is uniquely convenient to three major Arizona cities. Downtown Scottsdale is four miles away, Tempe is eight miles away, and it’s less than 12 miles from downtown Phoenix. Notable attractions nearby include the Scottsdale Stadium spring training facility and a Fall League baseball team, the Phoenix Zoo and the Desert Botanical Garden.
