The area where this beautiful beachside community is located was settled by pioneers in the 1880s, one of whom was Henry T. Gifford. In 1887, Gifford built a house, operated a citrus grove business, and established the first mercantile store in town, which also served as a post office, express office, and railroad ticket office. It is said that Henry’s wife, Sarah, suggested that the settlement be named “Vero,” in honor of its Latin meaning, “to speak the truth.”
In 1912, the Indian River Farms Company purchased 44,000 acres in the region and envisioned a town that would become “one of the finest in Florida.” In 1915, the company launched a City Beautiful Campaign, inspiring residents to make beautification efforts that are still visible today. Incorporated as the City of Vero in 1919, the city was reincorporated as the City of Vero Beach in 1925. That same year, some of Vero’s most prominent citizens successfully lobbied in Tallahassee for the creation of a new county that they named “Indian River.” Vero Beach was transferred from St. Lucie County to Indian River County and became the county seat.
