Birch Run was originally founded as a station on the Pere Marquette Railroad by John Moore, its first postmaster, in 1852. It was named after its creek, which runs through a large birch area. In 1863, the town was renamed Deer Lick and remained so until 1868, when it reverted back to Birch Run. It was organized as a village in 1954. Birch Run is located in southeastern Saginaw County in Birch Run Township, situated off of I-75 to the west. It is conveniently located approximately halfway between Flint and Saginaw, making it an ideal adjunct community to both metropolitan areas – they are both a mere 15-minute drive away. Even closer is historic Frankenmuth, which is just seven minutes down the road. Birch Run is best known for its large outlet mall, which is located just off the I-75 exit to the southwest.
