Known as the preeminent historical city on Oregon’s coast, Astoria is the oldest settlement west of the Mississippi River. Lewis & Clark spent the winter of 1805-1806 at nearby Fort Clatsop after following the Columbia River to its terminus in the Pacific Ocean. American investor John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company sent the Astor Expedition to the area in 1810, and it founded Fort Astoria in 1811 as its primary fur-trading post in the Northwest. An extremely important post for American exploration of the continent, this first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast was influential in establishing American claims to the land. The first U.S. Post Office west of the Rocky Mountains was established in Astoria in 1847, and the city was incorporated in 1876. Visitors to Astoria have a wide array of fun and interesting activities to choose from – there are numerous historic attractions, museums, art galleries, outdoor recreation areas and parks, and restaurants inviting diners to enjoy fresh, local seafood and sumptuous, local wines.

A popular landmark is the Astoria Column, a 125-foot-high tower that is perched atop Coxcomb Hill. Built by the Astor family in 1926 to commemorate the region’s early history, the column has an inner, circular staircase which allows visitors to climb its 164 stairs for a spectacular and panoramic view of the city, the Columbia River flowing into the Pacific Ocean, and even Mount Saint Helens! History buffs in particular will enjoy exploring renovated Victorian mansions, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Fort Stevens Military Reservation, and the recreated Fort Clatsop. Fort Stevens State Park features nine miles of trails for hiking and biking, miles of beach, and refreshing Coffenbury Lake. Bird-watchers can enjoy spotting over 200 different types of fowl in the area. When you have the chance, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the scenic town of Astoria.
