You will see both woodland and prairie at the Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, giving you a good sense of what the whole area’s ecology used to look like. There are well-marked hiking trails that take you on loops of varying lengths, all of which offer great views of the Flint Hills. If you are visiting in the summer, you should start early in the day as it gets very hot by late morning; and be sure to bring plenty of water with you.Another panoramic view awaits you when you visit the Atomic Cannon, one of only three M65 280-millimeter cannons built in the late 1950s to fire nuclear-capable shells. There is some other artillery on display here as well. It’s a short hike up from the parking area but well worth the climb.Your children will enjoy a visit to the Milford Nature Center and Fish Hatchery, where there is a lot to learn about creatures dead and alive. There is a lot to do in a small space: you can visit a butterfly house, feel the roughness of animal furs, identify and print animal tracks, view amazing aquatic and terrestrial dioramas and even climb into a eagle’s nest. Admission is free. The Geary County Historical Society and Museums used to be a schoolhouse—in fact, it housed all the city’s sixth grades when it functioned as a departmental school. Eventually, it was bought by a local philanthropist and turned over to the historical society, which conducts costumed living history presentations and workshops (often traveling to area schools) that will have your family enthralled. The exhibits focus on the history of Junction City and life-sized dioramas will show how people used to live.Experience a real Kansas working farm tour at the Munson Angus Farms-Black Horse Hitch.
