The manor was built in 1711 for the colonial-era Addison family before it burnt down in 1895. It was rebuilt in 1929 as a non-Georgian house of colonial revival architecture for Sumner Welles, an American government official and diplomat in the Foreign Service. The house is truly a mansion with 49 rooms, two outbuildings, a five car garage and formal gardens that have a view of the Potomac River. Once inside, you’ll get a chance to view the stunning crystal chandeliers, wood floors, and countless fireplaces. It was once Welles’ cottage in the Maryland countryside where he spent a bulk of his time.
Former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt often used the house to escape city life as well. The house was also used to entertain foreign dignitaries and host informal meetings for senior officials. The home was later owned by a wealthy oilman and arts collector, Fred Maloof, before it was turned over to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Oxon Hill has a variety of attractions including the mansion. The Rosecroft Raceway was once the location for live harness horse racing until it closed in 2010. Henson Creek Golf Course is also a great place to relax and enjoy the Maryland greenery. Near the golf course is a paved hiker-biker trail by the same name that follows along a stream so you can enjoy the Maryland outdoors first-hand. Many come to tour the Oxon Hill Manor. Hotels in this town are the convenient way to experience the house and its small town location.
